The Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 61 people, including two aid seekers, and raised concerns about rising malnutrition rates among children. The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, warned that the siege has led to a significant increase in malnutrition.
At least 23 people were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli air attack on the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza. In southern Gaza, two women were killed and 30 others were wounded near an aid distribution point north of Rafah. The UN said at least 875 people have died trying to access aid since late May.
Israel’s military has issued a forced displacement order for Palestinians living in 16 areas in northern Gaza, including Jabalia, where residents are fleeing in fear and panic. Health teams in Gaza warned that malnutrition rates are increasing, especially since the Israeli siege was tightened more than four months ago.
The European Union is divided over how to respond to Israel’s actions, with some calling for sanctions. The EU foreign ministers met in Brussels on Tuesday, but there was no agreement on taking any action.
The deal agreed upon last week allowed desperately needed food and fuel into Gaza, but details remain unclear. Public pressure has increased calls for the EU’s ties with Israel to be reassessed. Human rights groups have criticized the EU’s actions as insufficient, saying it sends an “extremely dangerous message” to perpetrators of atrocity crimes.
The conflict has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with famine looming and the healthcare system on the brink of collapse.
