Yellowstone’s Secret Pool Emerges After St. Nicholas Visit

Scientists at Yellowstone National Park have discovered a new thermal feature in Norris Geyser Basin, which may have formed around December 25, 2024, coinciding with a visit from St. Nicholas. The pool, located near “Tree Island,” is about 4 meters across and features warm, light blue water. Geologists used satellite imagery and infrasound monitoring to investigate the feature’s formation.

The data suggest that the new thermal feature did not form in a single major explosive event but rather through multiple small events. These initial events likely threw rocks, creating a small pit that was later filled with silica-rich water. The feature began developing on Christmas 2024, with further activity occurring in January and February 2025.

This discovery demonstrates the complex evolution of hydrothermal features at Norris Geyser Basin, which can take shape through various processes. Scientists are excited to continue studying this new feature, offering insights into Yellowstone’s unique geothermal dynamics.
