Chiefs Secure Guard Trey Smith with $94M Deal

The Kansas City Chiefs have secured right guard Trey Smith to the team through a four-year extension worth $94 million, with $70 million guaranteed. This deal replaces the franchise tag, making Smith the highest-paid guard in the NFL. The extension comes after Smith was tagged by the team earlier this year, providing him a one-year tender and setting the stage for July 15 negotiations.

Smith’s new deal ensures he is under contract with the Chiefs long-term, unlike teammate L’Jarius Sneed, who was traded weeks after being franchised in March. The Chiefs had expressed hopes of a multi-year solution with Smith, but it took time to finalize.

The team has committed significant resources to protecting quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ blindside, addressing concerns exposed during the Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. The signing of Smith solidifies the left guard position and completes the offensive line’s long-term plans.

With Smith signed, center Creed Humphrey will earn $18 million per year, while right tackle Jawaan Taylor will receive $20 million annually. Left tackle Jaylon Moore is set for $15 million. Kingsley Suamataia, a 2024 second-round pick, will start opposite Smith at guard.

The Chiefs’ 2025 O-line has been largely established, with this deal cementing the team’s commitment to protecting Mahomes. The addition of Smith provides a strong foundation, and with injuries or performance issues, having depth like Wanya Morris and Mike Caliendo is crucial. With Smith securing his future, the Chiefs can focus on retaking their throne in 2025.
