A possible case of H5N1, or bird flu, has been reported in a child in Marin County, California. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating how the child contracted the disease.
This comes after another child in Alameda County was diagnosed with bird flu in November. The exact method of exposure for that case remains unclear.
Marin County’s public health department started monitoring the bird flu in March 2024, indicating an increased risk. Meanwhile, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced plans to test raw milk from six states, including California, for signs of bird flu. The virus is widely present among wild birds, poultry, and livestock across the state.
