New Jersey’s Department of Health has confirmed a case of measles in Hudson County, with multiple locations visited by the infected individual. The exact location is not disclosed, but officials indicate that it appears to be unrelated to another reported case in Ocean County. According to health officials, eight locations across northern New Jersey were potentially exposed to the virus.
The locations include University Hospital’s Emergency Department in Newark and Hackensack University Medical Center’s Pediatric Emergency Department. Other sites visited by the patient include Roast’d Coffee in Jersey City, Newport Mall, Al-Basha in Paterson, Elite Pediatrics, CVS in Kearny, and Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital.
Health officials warn that individuals who were exposed may develop symptoms until August 2 if infected. The virus is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes and can linger for up to two hours after an individual leaves the area. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash.
To prevent transmission, the Health Department emphasizes the importance of staying up-to-date on vaccines.
