Drake’s Wireless Lineup Sparks Controversy and Criticism

Drake’s headline set at Wireless Festival’s 20th anniversary sparked mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. Initially met with skepticism after being eviscerated in a rap beef with Kendrick Lamar, Drake proved himself to be the perfect choice for the occasion.

The three-day festival showcased Drake’s versatility as an artist, curating sets around his various personas: the swoon-worthy Casanova, menacing rapper, and Black diaspora-surfing chameleon. R&B all-stars such as Mario, Bobby Valentino, Giveon, Bryson Tiller, and Lauryn Hill joined him on stage, making a statement of Drake’s standing among the greats.

However, some fans felt that the set was disjointed and strained, with moments of desperation from Drake to affirm his still-widespread adoration. The inclusion of surprise guests like Fakemink, Dave, J Hus, Central Cee, Headie One, Skepta, and even Vanessa Carlton seemed more like a nostalgic gesture than a genuine attempt to showcase the UK rap scene’s strength.

The organisation on Sunday was marred by technical issues with the app, leading to confusion over set lengths. Despite this, Vybz Kartel’s return for his first London performance in 20 years was a highlight of the festival.

Ultimately, the Wireless Festival felt like a celebration of nostalgia and guest stars rather than an authentic showcase of UK talent. While fans who attended all three days had a better experience, those with Sunday-only tickets were left feeling shortchanged.
