The US Army’s 3rd Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) successfully deployed a Mid-Range Capability (MRC) to Northern Territory, Australia, on July 15th, 2025. During Exercise Talisman Sabre 25, the MRC conducted a live fire exercise against a maritime target, demonstrating its capabilities in land-based maritime strike and strategic strike.
The successful test validated the US Army’s ability to forward deploy Long-Range Precision Fires (LRPF) and integrate them with Australian forces. The exercise also showcased the MDTF’s command and control capabilities from a combined multi-domain node.
This milestone marks a significant step forward in developing and employing advanced land-based maritime strike capabilities, as the live fire was conducted west of the International Date Line for the first time. The US Army aims to deploy combat-credible, multi-domain capabilities that support regional security and stability.
The exercise provided valuable insights into future capabilities and will inform the development of new land-based missile systems.
