Ultra-Orthodox Party Quits Israeli Government Over Military Exemption

TEL AVIV — The Shas ultra-Orthodox Jewish party has announced its resignation from the Israeli government, stripping Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of his parliamentary majority. This move comes as Israel fights its longest war in decades.

The decision was made due to the government’s failure to include a long-standing military exemption for the ultra-Orthodox community in a proposed law. The Shas party had demanded this exemption, which would exempt ultra-Orthodox men from conscription into the Israeli military.

With its resignation, the Shas party has weakened Netanyahu’s position and created uncertainty about the future of the government.
