EU Backs US Shift on Russia, Calls for Shared Burden

The European Union has backed US President Donald Trump’s decision to ramp up pressure on Russia over Ukraine, but is calling for a shared burden in arming the country.
The EU’s foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, stated that she would like Europe and the US “share the burden” of supporting Ukraine. She emphasized that if the US provides arms, it should also be clear who will foot the bill.
Kallas’ comments came after Trump announced plans to send Patriot air defense systems and other arms to European countries for use in Ukraine. The EU has already been providing significant funding for Ukrainian military efforts, but some member states are now urging their partners to do more.
EU analysts say that while the US policy shift may be a positive development, it is too early to determine whether it marks a lasting change in Washington’s stance on Russia and Ukraine.
The European Union as a whole has spent roughly the same amount as the US on supporting Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. However, some experts argue that ending Europe’s dependency on US-made weapons could take at least a decade.
