Medvedev Suggests Preemptive Strikes as NATO Intensifies Support for Ukraine

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called on Moscow to consider launching “preemptive strikes” against Western countries, following the U.S. and its NATO allies increasing defensive support for Ukraine.

Medvedev made the comments during an interview with state media outlet Tass, saying that statements from Western politicians are “complete nonsense.” He urged Russia to respond accordingly, suggesting that preemptive strikes may be necessary.

The remarks come amid tensions escalating between Russia and the West over Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump announced secondary tariffs on Moscow this week, slapping 100% tariffs on nations purchasing Russian oil if a peace agreement with Ukraine is not reached within 50 days.

Reports also surfaced that Trump considered urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to attack Russia’s capital during their call earlier this month. The White House clarified the issue as a misinterpretation, but Zelenskyy expressed concerns over the prolonged wait for action.

Meanwhile, NATO nations are receiving U.S.-supplied Patriot missile systems, which will be routed to Ukraine. However, delivery timelines and routes remain unclear, with some reports suggesting that Switzerland’s anticipated receipt of five Patriot batteries has been delayed.

Medvedev described the NATO actions as a “proxy war” against Russia, sparking concerns over the effectiveness of Trump’s approach. EU leaders have criticized the 50-day deadline for Putin, while Zelenskyy urged stronger sanctions to pressure Russia into action.
