Yellowstone’s Porcelain Basin Springs New Blue Water Pool

Another hole has formed at Yellowstone National Park. Geologists say this is part of the park’s extensive volcanic system, which undergoes regular changes. Recently, a blue water spring appeared in one of the basins, specifically Norris Geyser Basin.

The pool was discovered during routine maintenance by geologists in April and wasn’t present during their previous visit in fall 2023. The water is light blue, about 1 foot deep below the rim, and measures around 13 feet in diameter. It’s surrounded by small rocks covered with gray mud.

Geologists say this formation is not surprising, as hydrothermal explosions have occurred several times recently. High-resolution satellite imagery shows that the hole appeared on January 6 and was filled with water by February 13.

Monitoring stations can detect geophysical data indicating an explosion, leading to further monitoring. In April 2024, a nearby “small” explosion left a crater, while another in July formed due to multiple small events creating rocks and silica mud.

Geologists estimate that this new feature started developing on December 25, with activity continuing through late January and early February. Yellowstone is closely monitored by the USGS and the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory.
