New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr left Sunday’s 14-11 win against the New York Giants due to a left hand injury and potential concussion. Interim coach Darren Rizzi stated that Carr is undergoing tests to determine the severity of the injury, but a league source suggests there may be a fracture.
Carr suffered the injury after colliding with teammate Kevin Austin Jr. while attempting a pass with four minutes remaining in the game. He reached out his left arm to break his fall and also hit his helmet on the turf. Carr did not immediately get up after the collision and appeared to favor his left arm as he walked to the tunnel.
Tight end Juwan Johnson expressed concern for Carr, saying he is a selfless player who puts the team first. This marks the second time Carr has left a game with an injury this season, having also exited in Week 5 with an oblique injury.
The Saints have relied on backup quarterback Jake Haener, who replaced Carr in both the Chiefs and Giants games. Rookie Spencer Rattler started the three games that Carr missed, going 0-3 while completing 59.6% of his passes for 571 yards and two interceptions. Johnson expressed confidence in Haener’s abilities, saying “We’re excited to rally around him” as the team prepares for their next game against the Washington Commanders.
