Irish Comedy ‘Kneecap’ Sweeps British Independent Film Awards

Irish comedy film “Kneecap” dominated this year’s British Independent Film Awards, winning seven awards. The film, which tells the story of a west Belfast hip-hop trio’s mission to save their mother tongue, took home Best British Independent Film and Best Debut Screenwriter for director Rich Peppiatt.

The film also won several craft awards, including Best Casting, Best Editing, and Best Original Music. “Kneecap” star newcomer Susan Chardy received the Breakthrough Performance award, while writer-director Sandhya Suri took home the Best Screenplay award.

Other winners included Rungano Nyoni for Best Director of “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,” Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Best Lead Performance in “Hard Truths,” and Franz Rogowski for Best Supporting Performance in “Bird.” The film “Anora” won the Best International Independent Film award, with director Sean Baker thanking 90’s boyband Take That for allowing them to use their song.
