Microsoft has announced that it will no longer provide security updates for Windows 10, but in a surprise move, the company is now offering a free option for users to continue receiving security updates for another year.
As of October, when support for Windows 10 ends, Microsoft’s extended security update program will no longer be available. However, users can opt-in to receive free security updates by using cloud backup and connecting it with their OneDrive account. This is a significant development for millions of users who still rely on Windows 10, accounting for over 53% of all installs.
While this offer provides a lifeline for users without incurring any additional costs, there are some caveats. Users may face limitations in terms of storage space, as some backups exceed the free 5GB offered by OneDrive. Nonetheless, at $2 per month for an additional 100GB of cloud storage, users can still upgrade to the paid version and stay within their budget.
Microsoft has outlined three options for users who want to continue using Windows 10: redeeming Microsoft Rewards points, paying $30 for extended security updates, or using Windows Backup with OneDrive. The free option will guarantee updates until October 13, 2026, although businesses may have the option to purchase additional years of support.
This move comes as Microsoft faces criticism for its handling of Windows 10 and the challenges it has faced in convincing users to upgrade to Windows 11. With the free security update option, Microsoft is providing a temporary reprieve for users who are hesitant to make the switch. However, this solution remains a temporary fix, and users will still need to consider upgrading to a newer operating system eventually.
