AMD has revealed a potential next-generation console powerhouse in the form of its Zen 6 APU called Magnus. The massive 264mm squared graphics die is paired with a wider-than-ever 384-bit memory bus, connected to a smaller SoC die via a Bridge Die. This unusual design may have gamers speculating about the true identity of the Magnus APU.
While Moore’s Law is Dead initially thought Magnus was for mid-range laptops, documents now list it for consoles, alongside codenames like Mero (Steam Deck) and Jupiter (rumored PS handheld). The specs, including 11 CPU cores (three Zen 6, eight Zen 6 C), seem to match the PlayStation naming convention. However, an AMD leaker suggests that the design may be too expensive for a console, pointing out similarities between Magnus and Mark Cerny’s past designs.
The wider memory bus and increased Compute Units (80) have sparked debate over whether Magnus is actually the PS6 APU or the next-generation Xbox system. One thing is certain: the AMD Zen 6 APU will play a significant role in shaping the next generation of consoles.
