Uber is investing $300 million in Lucid and partnering with Nuro to deploy over 20,000 robotaxis across the US by 2029. The ride-hailing company will use self-driving technology developed by Nuro to power its robotaxi service.
As part of the deal, Uber will invest in Lucid’s electric vehicle production, while Nuro will build and supply the autonomous systems for the robotaxis. The partnership aims to bring affordable and accessible autonomous transportation to more people worldwide.
Lucid’s electric vehicles are designed with a 450-mile range, which is expected to reduce costs and charging times. The technology used in the robotaxis falls under Level 4 autonomy, allowing them to operate without human intervention in normal traffic conditions.
This partnership follows Uber’s existing alliance with Alphabet-backed Waymo, which expanded its service to Atlanta and Austin earlier this year. Tesla also offers autonomous features, but they fall into a lower level of automation.
Nuro has secured significant funding from top investors, including Google and the SoftBank Vision Fund. The startup is confident that its technology will be commercially viable and scalable globally.
