Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end T.J. Watt has agreed to a three-year extension worth $123 million, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history. The deal includes $108 million fully guaranteed at signing and averages $41 million per year.
Watt, 31, was considered one of the top free agents on the market after a successful season that saw him lead the league with 73.5 sacks over the past five seasons. Despite struggling towards the end of last season, Watt remains committed to being an impact player.
“I prefer the left, but at this point in my career, I want to be an impact player,” he said in January. “I don’t want to be schemed out of games. I want to be able to deliver the football in good field positions or take the football away.”
The Steelers were confident that Watt would re-sign and had general manager Omar Khan saying, “I’m hopeful T.J. will finish his career here.” Watt’s teammates, including defensive captain Cameron Heyward, also expressed their support for him, urging the team to secure his contract.
With this deal now complete, the Steelers can move forward with a settled roster as they enter the critical preseason after making significant moves in the offseason, including signing Aaron Rodgers and acquiring Jalen Ramsey. Watt will be expected to report to training camp on Tuesday.
