Microsoft Shuts Down Movies & TV Storefront on Windows and Xbox

Microsoft has shut down its storefront for buying or renting movies and TV shows on Windows and Xbox platforms after 12 years of operation. The company announced the closure, citing that it no longer offers new entertainment content for purchase.

Users who have purchased media content from the Microsoft Store in the past will still be able to access their content via the Movies & TV app, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. However, users cannot buy new media content anymore through the storefront.

The company has removed the “Buy” button and shown an alert stating that it will no longer make movies and TV shows available for purchase. Users who have purchased content in the US can use a service called Movies Anywhere to sync their content with other services.

This move marks the end of an almost 20-year run of Microsoft selling linear entertainment media, following its exit from the music streaming business in 2017. The company has stated that it will not provide refunds for recent purchases and advises users to sign up for third-party platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video if they want to continue watching movies and TV on Windows or Xbox.
