Apple has announced a new commitment to invest $500 million in the US production of rare earth magnets, with partner MP Materials. The partnership aims to establish an all-new recycling facility for processing recycled rare earth elements and boost domestic supply of this critical material.
As part of its pledge to spend over $500 billion in the US over the next four years, Apple is committed to buying American-made rare earth magnets developed at MP Materials’ flagship Independence facility in Fort Worth, Texas. The two companies will also work together to develop novel magnet materials and innovative processing technologies to enhance magnet performance.
The investment will be used to build out a state-of-the-art factory with neodymium magnet manufacturing lines specifically designed for Apple products. This will enable MP Materials to significantly boost its overall production and support dozens of new jobs in advanced manufacturing and R&D.
The recycling facility, located in Mountain Pass, California, will enable MP Materials to take in recycled rare earth feedstock and reprocess it for use in Apple products. The partnership marks the latest chapter in Apple’s commitment to investing in American innovation and next-generation recycling technologies.
In a statement, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said: “American innovation drives everything we do at Apple… We couldn’t be more excited about the future of American manufacturing.”
