UK Forces Accommodates Afghan Family Members Amidst Data Breach Concerns

A military data breach has led to the influx of as many as 22 family members from Afghanistan into the UK, sparking concerns over national security and public transparency.

Government sources revealed that Afghans who were resettled in Britain brought an average of eight family members with them, prompting officials to scramble for accommodation. In response, ministers explored unconventional solutions, including merging two houses on military bases.

The move was made possible by a super-injunction that limited public disclosure, which was initially granted in September 2023 but extended at the request of then-Transport Secretary Sir Grant Shapps shortly before last year’s general election.

Sir Grant has since faced criticism for attempting to rewrite history, as he claimed surprise at the prolonged duration of the injunction. However, records show that he successfully appealed against a judge’s decision to lift it in May last year, effectively keeping the restriction in place.
