Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos believes generative artificial intelligence tools are expanding creativity during the making of movies and TV series. This shift moves beyond cost-cutting options for studios to a means for creators to produce high-quality content more efficiently.
Sarandos emphasized that AI represents an opportunity for creators to make films and series better, not just cheaper. This approach is exemplified by Netflix’s collaboration with Argentinian VFX artists on the sci-fi series El Eternauta (The Eternaut). The project showcased the use of virtual production and AI-powered visual effects tools.
In a notable example, Sarandos mentioned that the team completed a VFX sequence 10 times faster than it could have been achieved with traditional methods. This was made possible by combining AI-driven and traditional VFX tools with virtual production.
The results were positive, with both the creators and audience thrilled with the outcome. Sarandos sees these tools as helping creators expand storytelling possibilities on screen, which he finds endlessly exciting.
