A Libyan war crimes suspect, Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri, was arrested in Germany on a sealed arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He is accused of committing crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, and rape, in Libya from 2015 to 2020. The ICC hailed the arrest as an “important development” in seeking accountability for crimes committed in detention facilities in Libya. El Hishri will remain in custody until legal proceedings are completed. German authorities have been praised by the ICC for their cooperation in detaining him. This is the first trial of a Libyan suspect at the ICC, and it follows a UN Security Council call to investigate war crimes in Libya in 2011.
