Scottie Scheffler delivered a relentless performance at The Open, carding a 7-under 64 to take a one-shot lead over Matt Fitzpatrick of England. This marks Scheffler’s lowest round in a major and his 10th time holding a share of the lead after a major round since 2020.
Scheffler got off to a strong start, making eight birdies on a wild afternoon of weather that saw thousands at Royal Portrush watching him. He is now 10-under 132 as he chases the third leg of his career Grand Slam. Fitzpatrick, who had four straight birdies before missing a 5-foot par putt, shot a 66 to stay in contention.
Brian Harman took advantage of surprisingly good weather and played bogey-free for a 65 that left him two shots behind Scheffler and Haotong Li of China. Everyone else was five shots behind or more.
Fitzpatrick reflected on his recent struggles, saying he has made significant improvements with new caddie and coach. He now faces the challenge of keeping up with world No. 1 Scheffler. “I think the pressure is for him to win the golf tournament,” Fitzpatrick said.
