Meta Platforms has declined to sign the European Union’s artificial intelligence code of practice, calling it an “overreach” that will hinder growth. According to global affairs chief Joel Kaplan, Europe is heading in the wrong direction with its approach to AI.
The EU’s new rules aim to improve transparency and safety in AI development but have introduced legal uncertainties for model developers, according to Kaplan. He warned that these measures go beyond the scope of the AI Act passed last year and will stunt companies’ ability to develop “frontier” AI models.
Meta is not alone in its concerns; other tech giants like ASML Holding and Airbus have also expressed opposition to the EU’s code. However, some companies like OpenAI are committed to signing the code of practice. The rules will take effect next month, and their implementation has sparked debate among industry leaders.
