UK-Germany Partnership Marks New Era in Relations

The signing of the Kensington treaty marks a significant milestone in the UK-Germany partnership, as both countries signalled a new era in cooperation and mutual respect. In contrast to the previous press conference between Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer, which had an awkward tone, today’s meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was marked by a formal handshake and minimal eye contact.

The two-hour press conference began on time and covered various key areas of cooperation, including defence partnerships, new investments, and increased access for schoolchildren and frequent travellers. The partnership also encompasses cooperation on irregular migration, a new rail route between England and Germany, and a commitment to working together on international issues like the situation in Gaza.

Chancellor Merz’s comments were notable, as he spoke proudly of the treaty and expressed his disapproval of Brexit. This marked a significant shift from previous statements by Macron, who had merely expressed regret for the UK’s departure from the EU.

The tone of the press conference shifted when Sky News’s political editor began to ask lengthy questions, leaving both Starmer and Merz looking uncomfortable. However, Chancellor Merz took this opportunity to showcase his sense of humour and charm, answering questions with brevity and wit.

On a domestic note, Keir Starmer addressed the suspension of the whip for four backbenchers, stating it was done for the country’s benefit rather than the party’s. He also defended the decision to widen the franchise to 16-year-olds, while restricting foreign influence in UK elections.

The Conservative Party has been critical of this move, with some arguing that lowering the voting age could lead to uninformed decisions. However, the Liberal Democrats have welcomed the change and called for further reforms, such as proportional representation.
