A low-risk exposure to measles has been reported at Saratoga Hospital’s Emergency Department on July 14 and Albany Medical Center’s Emergency Department on July 16, according to the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). A Vermont resident who recently traveled internationally was diagnosed with measles after visiting both hospitals.
To minimize potential spread, people who were in Saratoga Hospital on that day are being advised to contact the hospital. Those exposed at Albany Medical Center have already been notified and contacted directly. The NYSDOH is collaborating with local hospitals to investigate the case and implement measures to prevent further transmission.
The best protection against measles remains the MMR vaccine, which is recommended for international travelers two weeks before departure. As a precaution, Saratoga Hospital has implemented mask-wearing requirements in its Emergency Department.
