Amazon has alerted its Prime customers of a growing number of impersonation scams targeting its users. The company emailed around 220 million subscribers, warning them to be cautious of fake messages claiming their subscription will automatically renew at an unexpected price.
Scammers may send emails with personal information and include a “cancel subscription” button leading to a fake Amazon login page. Amazon advises customers not to click on links in these messages, as scammers use fake websites to steal login credentials and banking information.
To stay safe, Amazon recommends verifying purchases by only using its official website and app, being wary of false urgency, and avoiding buying gift cards. Customers can also contact Amazon to confirm whether a message is authentic.
Dharmesh Mehta, Amazon’s vice president of Selling Partner Services, stated that scammers impersonating Amazon put consumers at risk. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also advises understanding a scam’s mechanics to spot it. Both Amazon and the FTC encourage consumers to report potential scams to prevent future loss and help investigations.
