Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has described the situation in Gaza as “unbearable” due to destruction and starvation. In a phone interview with Italy’s public broadcaster RAI TG2 Post, he called for transparency regarding last Thursday’s military attack on the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza, which caused three deaths and ten injuries.
The Cardinal reiterated that the Holy See is open to mediation but emphasized that “mediation” only works when both sides accept it. He expressed hope that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s phone call with Pope Leo would lead to serious investigation and action, as the situation in Gaza demands a drastic change.
Cardinal Parolin condemned the ongoing wars and described them as a “war without limits.” He called for transparency and accountability regarding military attacks on civilians, including Christian communities. The Cardinal also expressed concern over the lack of political will to end conflicts, highlighting that mediation can only be effective when both parties are willing to participate.
The Vatican remains committed to its diplomatic efforts, but it is uncertain whether these efforts will yield results in the current situation. Despite this, Cardinal Parolin holds on to hope for a ceasefire and peace in the region.
