Rory McIlroy is pushing forward with his Open Championship bid, despite struggling off the tee in two rounds at Royal Portrush. The Northern Irish golfer opened with a 1-under 70 and followed up with a 2-under 69 on Friday, leaving him seven shots behind leader Scottie Scheffler.
McIlroy’s performance has been marred by poor driving, which he attributed to the challenging conditions on the course. However, he remains optimistic about his chances going into the weekend. “It was a good day,” he said. “I feel like I maybe could be a couple closer to the lead, but overall in a decent position heading into the weekend.”
The 38-year-old McIlroy knows that his age will be an issue if he fails to win a major championship at Royal Portrush, which is only held every six to eight years. He acknowledged that this may be his last chance to achieve success at home and vowed to make the most of it.
“I’m excited for that opportunity,” McIlroy said. “I didn’t have this opportunity six years ago, so to play an extra two days in this atmosphere, in front of these crowds, I’m very excited for that.” With his breakthrough at the Masters in April, McIlroy is now poised to complete a historic season.
Despite struggling with accuracy off the tee, McIlroy has shown flashes of brilliance on the course. He will need to build on this performance if he hopes to challenge for the title over the weekend.
