DC Studios boss James Gunn has revealed that he “would love” to cast Henry Cavill in another role within the DC Universe (DCU), despite his departure from playing Clark Kent as part of the franchise. Gunn broke the news on a podcast, recalling how he and co-chair Peter Safran informed Cavill that he would no longer be reprising his iconic role.
When Gunn and Safran were appointed to lead DC Studios in 2022, they found a “vacuum” at the time, with various plans not aligning with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) CEO David Zaslav’s vision. The duo then sat down with Cavill to deliver the news, which he handled graciously.
Although David Corenswet has taken over as Superman in the new DCU franchise, titled “Gods and Monsters,” Gunn expressed interest in casting Cavill in another project. This could potentially involve a future film adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic graphic novel “The Dark Knight Returns.”
Gunn acknowledged that Cavill is widely regarded as one of the best Supers to date, surpassing Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal. He also poked fun at his own reputation for sometimes botching well-established franchises, such as Superman.
Cavill has already taken on a new role in a DCU project, and Gunn hopes that this will not affect his reputation. The actor was reportedly disappointed by the lack of opportunities to play Ultraman, a character he would have been perfect for.
