Hong Kong Hit by Powerful Typhoon Wipha

A powerful typhoon, Wipha, brought widespread disruption to travel and daily life in Hong Kong and southern China on Sunday. The storm made landfall in Guangdong province at around 5:50 p.m. local time, weakening from a typhoon to a tropical storm as it moved west.

The Hong Kong Weather Observatory warned residents of strong gusts and heavy rain, prompting 253 people to seek shelter in government facilities, while 26 sought medical treatment. The city’s Hospital Authority canceled all outpatient clinics, and flights were delayed or canceled at Cathay Pacific.

Hong Kong International Airport suspended its SkyPier Terminal service, and classes were canceled at schools. Disney theme parks also closed due to the storm. Wipha is expected to gradually weaken as it moves along the western coast of Guangdong before making another landfall in Vietnam on Monday.

The U.S. Embassy in Vietnam warned of heavy rain, strong winds, and extensive flooding that could lead to mudslides starting from Monday. The storm comes just days after dozens died in Ha Long Bay due to a capsized boat. Wipha also caused heavy storms in Taiwan on Saturday and intensified southwest monsoon rains in the Philippines, with thousands taking shelter in government facilities.
