Postmaster General David Steiner Vows to Preserve USPS Independence

The new head of the US Postal Service (USPS), David Steiner, has addressed concerns about privatization, assuring employees that he does not believe in transforming the agency into a private sector entity. In his first video message, Steiner stated that the Postal Service should remain as a self-financing, independent entity within the executive branch.

Steiner’s background at FedEx and Waste Management had raised concerns among employee unions about potential conflicts of interest, but USPS officials have confirmed that any financial holdings will be resolved in accordance with law. Union leaders are cautiously optimistic that Steiner is committed to preserving the agency’s independence.

Steiner acknowledged the controversial “Delivering for America” reorganization plan introduced by his predecessor Louis DeJoy and stated that he aims to assess and improve USPS’ approach while prioritizing competitiveness, pricing, and product strategies. The Postmaster General also recognized the critical role USPS plays as a national infrastructure, which cannot be replicated by private actors.

Industry analysts and lawmakers warn against privatization, citing concerns over higher shipping prices, reduced mail service to rural areas, and potential negative impacts on public services. Bipartisan opposition in Congress has introduced a resolution ensuring the Postal Service remains an independent federal agency, with 218 sponsors currently backing the bill.

USPS relies on stamp sales and other service fees for funding, with no tax dollars received to operate. To stabilize finances, the agency recently raised the price of a first-class “forever” stamp by almost 7%.
