Warner Bros.-owned DC Studios has scored a major win at the box office with its big-budget superhero film Superman. The movie, directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet as Superman, declined only 54% from its first weekend to $57.2 million, taking its domestic total to $235 million after 10 days.
Superman’s impressive performance has also helped DC Studios surpass Disney in the domestic marketshare for the year so far. The film’s international tally stands at $171.8 million, with a global total of $406.8 million.
The movie’s success marks a significant turnaround for the superhero genre, which has struggled to compete with Marvel Studios’ dominance. Superman’s performance is particularly notable given its direct competition with Marvel’s upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to open in theaters on July 25.
Other films in the top five include Jurassic World Rebirth, which crossed the $600 million milestone globally, and F1: The Movie, directed by Jerry Bruckheimer. R-rated horror reboot I Know What You Did Last Summer came in third with an estimated $13 million domestically.
Superman’s success is attributed to strong word-of-mouth and reviews, as well as its narrow decline compared to Marvel’s summer 2024 blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine. The film’s cast, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, has also received praise from audiences.
With Superman continuing to break box office records, DC Studios is now poised to challenge Marvel Studios’ dominance in the superhero landscape.
