ASCAP Criticizes Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Works in AI Training

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has submitted a statement to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee’s hearing on artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the importance of protecting copyrighted works from unauthorized use. The nonprofit organization reiterated its stance that using copyrighted materials without permission for AI training is not fair use.

In response to the July 16 hearing, ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews stated that American copyright law encourages innovation, but the unauthorized use of copyrighted works undermines the creative economy, which generates over $1 trillion annually and supports millions of creators. The statement emphasizes the need for a balanced approach that allows for innovation while protecting intellectual property rights.
