UFC legend Dustin Poirier ended his career with a unanimous decision loss to Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 318 on Saturday night. While Poirier is at peace with his decision to step away, he’s still perturbed by the final scorecards.
Poirier and Holloway had an instant classic fight, with both fighters scoring knockdowns throughout the five-round war. However, two judges scored the fight 49-46 in Holloway’s favor, while the third had it 48-47. During the post-fight press conference, Poirier expressed his disappointment with the final scorecards.
“I obviously wanted to win,” Poirier said. “Max is a great fighter and a tough competitor. I really thought it might have been 2-2 going into the fifth round.” Poirier believed he had Holloway hurt in the second round, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.
Despite the loss, Poirier is glad to be ending his career on his own terms. He wanted to go out with a fight that would show he can still compete at a high level. “I’m going out because I want to,” he said. “I wanted it to be a war and drag it out as long as possible.”
