As summer arrives in Missouri, it’s essential to prioritize protection against mosquitoes and ticks. These insects thrive during warmer months and can transmit diseases that go beyond just itchy skin.
Tick-borne diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever pose significant health risks. According to Dr. Jessica Snyder, a board-certified family physician, “If you find a tick attached to your skin, remove it carefully with tweezers and save it in a sealed container for identification.”
To avoid these complications, take preventative measures:
Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, socks, and shoes when outdoors, especially in wooded or grassy areas.
Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on skin and clothing. Follow the label instructions and reapply as needed.
Regularly inspect your body and attire for ticks after outdoor activities.
For minor tick and mosquito bites, follow these three steps:
Wash the bite area with soap and water to prevent infection.
Apply a lotion, cream, or paste containing calamine, antihistamine, or corticosteroid to soothe the skin and reduce itching.
Take an oral antihistamine, such as cetirizine (Zyrtec) or loratadine (Claritin), to relieve itching and inflammation.
By taking these steps, you can minimize the risks associated with mosquito and tick bites this summer.
