A Delta Air Lines flight experienced an engine fire shortly after departing from California on Friday, July 18. The Boeing 767-400 took off from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) but was forced to return and make a safe landing at approximately 2:10 p.m. local time.
Video footage captured by the YouTube channel L.A. Flights shows visible flames coming from the left engine of the plane shortly after takeoff. The aircraft was headed to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) when it turned back due to the fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed that it is investigating the matter. A Delta representative explained that the aircraft returned to LAX shortly after departure due to a warning related to the left engine, which was later revealed to be an indication of an issue with the plane’s maintenance.
The flight crew followed procedures and safely returned to the gate, and all 227 passengers on board were able to exit the plane normally. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident. The airline issued a statement apologizing for the disruption to travelers’ plans and confirming that both local firefighters and Delta’s maintenance team inspected the plane following the incident.
The FAA is investigating the cause of the engine fire, which is currently under review.
