Ryanair, led by CEO Michael O’Leary, is considering a larger bonus payment to staff for identifying passengers with oversized bags. Currently, staff receive €1.50 per bag intercept, but the airline aims to increase this amount to deter people from bringing excess baggage on planes.
O’Leary stated that Ryanair wants to eliminate oversized bags, which cause delays and are unfair to compliant passengers. The airline reports that only a small minority of passengers pay for oversized baggage fees, typically up to £75 per bag, depending on the route and travel date.
To incentivize staff, Ryanair plans to share a portion of excess baggage fees with them. O’Leary also emphasized the importance of following baggage rules, citing that over 99.9% of passengers comply correctly. The airline is implementing new size standards for carry-on bags due to EU regulations, allowing larger bags on certain flights.
Ryanair’s profits surged in the April-June period, reaching €820m, driven by Easter timing and fare increases. O’Leary aims to control costs to boost profitability in the summer season, while maintaining average fares similar to 2023.
