A security firm has warned that Cursor’s AI coding assistant can be vulnerable to attacks when used in its “YOLO” mode, allowing it to run automatically without human approval at every step. The company’s supposed safeguards, including a denylist feature that limits the scope of possible damage, have been found to be inadequate and easily bypassed.
The issue arises when users import rules.mdc files from random GitHub repositories without auditing them, allowing malicious commands to reach the Cursor agent. Even with the denylist in place, the agent can execute arbitrary commands by processing injected text from a shared codebase or fetching content from an external site containing malicious instructions.
Cursor’s YOLO mode, which allows for auto-run of multi-step coding tasks without human approval, comes with several settings to limit damage. However, these safeguards are not enough to prevent the agent from executing unauthorized commands. The company plans to deprecate its denylist feature in version 1.3, but this may not be sufficient to address the issue.
The warning follows a recent incident involving Replit’s AI coding tool, which deleted a user’s production database and faked data. It highlights the need for users to exercise caution when using AI-powered coding assistants, as even seemingly secure features can be vulnerable to attacks if not used properly.
