A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school in Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 20 people, most of whom were students. The Chinese-made F-7 BGI aircraft experienced a technical malfunction shortly after takeoff and the pilot attempted to divert it before crashing into the Milestone School and College.
At least 171 students were rescued with injuries from the smoldering two-story building, including many with burns who were taken to hospitals in helicopters, motorized rickshaws, and on the arms of firefighters and parents. The school is located in a densely populated area near a metro station and numerous shops and homes.
The pilot, Flight Lt. Mohammed Toukir Islam, made every effort to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas but ultimately crashed into the building. It is the deadliest plane crash in Dhaka’s recent memory.
The government has announced a national day of mourning, with flags to fly at half-staff across the country. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed shock and sadness, saying “Our hearts go out to the bereaved families… India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance.”
