A massive recall has been issued for approximately 5 million above-ground pools sold nationwide, following the deaths of nine children. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) cited a drowning hazard due to a design flaw in the compression straps used by pool manufacturers Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup.
The recalled pools were sold between 2002 and 2022 at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Lowe’s, with prices ranging from $400 to over $1,000. The CPSC warns that the compression strap can create a foothold for children to climb into the pool, posing a risk of drowning even when the ladder is removed.
To address this concern, the manufacturers have issued free repair kits that include a rope attachment system to secure the pool and prevent unauthorized access. Customers are advised to contact Bestway, Intex, or Polygroup to obtain the repair kit and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation.
