Scottie Scheffler has won his fourth major title and moved closer to achieving a career Grand Slam after dominating The Open at Royal Portrush.
The American golfer, who finished 17 under par for the week, claimed victory by four strokes over Harris English in his final round. This win marks Scheffler’s third leg of the career Grand Slam, with major victories already achieved at The Masters and PGA Championship. With this triumph, he now has a strong chance to complete the achievement at next summer’s US Open.
Scheffler, who took a four-shot lead into the final day, played consistently throughout the week, making three birdies in his first five holes to assert control early on. He eventually completed the round with a 3-under-par 68 and an overall score of 17 under par.
This victory has secured Scheffler’s place at the top of the FedExCup standings and extends his streak of top-25 finishes in all 16 worldwide starts this season, including 11 consecutive top 10s.
Tributes poured in from fellow golfers, with Rory McIlroy acknowledging that Scheffler is on a different level to others in the sport. “He’s an unbelievable player, an incredible champion and a great person too,” said McIlroy.
The PGA Tour heads to Minnesota for the 3M Open next week, before moving on to the Nero Championship in Scotland from August 7-10.
