A recent study by the University of Colorado Boulder has raised serious health concerns about erythritol, a common ingredient in artificial sweeteners. The research found that certain Splenda products containing erythritol may significantly increase stroke risk, creating multiple obligations for observant Jews.
The Torah emphasizes six Mitzvos related to avoiding dangerous food additives like erythritol: protecting one’s health and well-being, taking care of oneself, choosing life-preserving actions, saving someone’s life, not standing idly by your brother’s blood, and not ignoring known dangers.
According to the study, exposure to erythritol can cause immediate cellular damage, including increased oxidative stress, reduced nitric oxide production, and constricted blood vessels. In addition, a separate study tracking over 4,000 people found that those with high blood erythritol levels experienced significantly more strokes and heart attacks within three years.
It is recommended to immediately discontinue use of purple and brown packaged Splenda products containing erythritol, carefully check ingredient labels for different names, inform family members about the dangers, and consult healthcare providers for safer alternatives. The traditional yellow-packaged Splenda products appear to be safe.
As observant Jews, it is our duty to prioritize the Mitzvah of preserving life – our own and others. We must not ignore this information and must take immediate action to protect ourselves and our communities from the dangers of erythritol-containing Splenda products.
