A 61-year-old Ukrainian man, Ihor Hrushevskyi, was found dead in his pool at an apartment complex in Spain’s southern resort town of Villajoyosa. The body was discovered on June 29 by neighbors who reported him face-down in the water. Local authorities initially ruled out foul play but said the death appeared suspicious.
Hrushevskyi, a former senior official at Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, had moved to the apartment complex about 16 months before his death. His past work involved combating organized crime, making it difficult for investigators to gather information on him.
Residents of the resort, popular with Russian and Ukrainian expats, were unaware of Hrushevskyi’s death until reporters arrived asking questions. The investigation into his death is ongoing, with officials considering a medical crisis or foul play as possible causes.
Hrushevskyi’s death comes after another former Russian military helicopter pilot, Maksim Kuzminov, was killed in the same apartment complex in February 2024. Kuzminov had defected from Russia and was granted asylum in Ukraine before his murder.
