Northern Lights to Reach Southern U.S. Tuesday Night

A rare opportunity for people in the northern United States to witness the northern lights is expected on Tuesday night, as geomagnetic storm conditions may pull the phenomenon farther south. According to NOAA, a Kp index of five is forecasted for Tuesday, suggesting the northern lights will be brighter and more active at lower latitudes.

This forecast comes as winds from a cooler spot on the sun’s surface are expected to cause minor geomagnetic storms late Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. While there may not be storm conditions on these nights, similar auroral activity is still possible on Wednesday night with a Kp index of four.

The northern lights will have the highest chance of being visible in northern Canada and Alaska, but parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan are also expected to see some displays. The chances of seeing the northern lights decrease as you move south.

To witness the northern lights, experts recommend traveling to a north-facing location with minimal light pollution between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time. For photography, using a wide-angle lens with an aperture of four or less and disabling flash is recommended.
