Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson will not report to training camp on Tuesday as he holds out over a contract dispute. The four-time Pro Bowl selection has been seeking a long-term deal, which includes guaranteed money past the first year. However, the team is unwilling to meet his demands.
Hendrickson is training in Jacksonville, Florida, and has expressed frustration with the team’s stance on guarantees. He previously told ESPN that he wants more security for his future earnings. The Bengals’ decision not to give Hendrickson guaranteed money past the first year is unusual, as other prominent edge rushers such as Myles Garrett and T.J. Watt have received similar deals.
The team’s president, Mike Brown, downplayed the situation, stating that Hendrickson is a tough negotiator but ultimately will reach an agreement. Coach Zac Taylor said he has had good communication with Hendrickson and rookie defensive end Shemar Stewart, who also opted out due to a contract dispute.
Brown acknowledged that Hendrickson’s age, 31, might be a concern for the team, but believes he is still a valuable asset. Director of player personnel Duke Tobin expressed respect for Hendrickson, calling him a “fantastic player” who has been productive and a great signing for the team.
The Bengals’ new defensive coordinator, Al Golden, also wants Hendrickson to return, as he enjoyed working with him in his previous stint as an assistant coach. The team is eager for Hendrickson to join them, hoping for a quick resolution to the dispute.
