WHO Expands Medical Services in Gaza After Staff Residence Attack

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced plans to expand its medical services in Gaza, despite an attack on its staff residence by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). The organization’s representative for the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, stated that the attacks on the WHO’s main warehouse and staff housing have severely affected the organization but will not deter them from delivering aid.

Four people were detained during the attack, with three later released while one cleaner/caretaker is still in Israeli custody. The IDF claimed to have taken action against individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism, but it was unclear whether this included WHO staff members.

The WHO’s warehouse held substantial supplies of essential medical equipment and medicines, including trauma supplies, antibiotics, and cancer medication. However, the attack caused significant damage and a fire, forcing employees and their families to evacuate on foot. The organization has condemned the attacks in the strongest terms and stressed that it will continue to operate despite the challenges.

Dr. Peeperkorn emphasized that the WHO remains committed to providing aid to Gaza and called on member states to increase support for the organization. He stated that any threat to its premises is a threat to the entire humanitarian health response in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for sustained medical supplies.

The IDF had previously claimed to have been in contact with international organizations before starting their action in Deir al Balah. However, the WHO has expressed concern over the mistreatment of those sheltering in the area and the destruction of its main warehouse.
