Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, the frontman of Black Sabbath and reality TV star, has passed away at the age of 76, his family announced on Tuesday. Osbourne was surrounded by loved ones when he died.
Born John “Ozzy” Osbourne in Birmingham, England, he began his career as a musician after being inspired by The Beatles’ song “She Loves You.” He joined Black Sabbath in 1967 and the band’s loud, gloomy music became immediately popular. Ozzy was known for his outrageous stage antics, including biting the head off a bat.
Osbourne left Black Sabbath in 1979 due to substance abuse issues but continued his solo career with great success. His reality TV show “The Osbournes” won a Primetime Emmy award and launched the careers of his family members. He was also a two-time Grammy winner, including awards for best rock album and performance.
Osbourne struggled with health issues, including pneumonia, multiple surgeries, and Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2020. Despite these setbacks, he continued to perform intermittently. In 2023, he announced that his touring career was over due to health reasons but expressed hope to perform one more show if he could regain his health.
Osbourne is survived by his wife Sharon, three children from his first marriage, and three children with Sharon. His bandmates Geezer Butler and Tony Iommi have paid tribute to him on social media, calling him their “brother” and “friend.”
