Apple’s Pro Display XDR is five years old today, marking half a decade since its release in December 2019 alongside the Mac Pro. The high-end external monitor was reintroduced by Apple after a three-year hiatus and features a 32-inch Retina display with a 6K resolution.
The display boasts an impressive brightness of up to 1,600 nits in HDR mode, supporting stunning colors and contrast. It also features Apple’s proprietary LED backlighting system and the P3 wide color gamut. The Pro Display XDR is available with matte nano-texture glass to reduce glare.
Initially released at $4,999, the display garnered attention for its high price due to its engineering complexity. However, it remains one of only two external monitors sold by Apple, alongside the Studio Display. Speculation about a second-generation Pro Display XDR has been circulating, with rumors suggesting an updated version with quantum dot technology and an internal Apple silicon chip.
Despite no further details on upgrades or release timing, the Pro Display XDR remains Apple’s flagship display offering.
