Lions Training Camp Focus on O-Line, Hooker, and Manu Development

The Detroit Lions have settled into a starting lineup for their offensive line grouping, but coach Dan Campbell wants to see how it holds up before making any permanent changes. Rookie center Tate Ratledge has been the key player in this group, impressing Campbell with his progress.

“We’re working him in there, see how fast he can get it,” Campbell said of Ratledge. “I know it’s only day one, but much better than even spring, getting his feet under him.”

The Lions have an ace in Graham Glasgow, who can slide right into center if needed, giving Campbell confidence in the team’s ability to adapt.

Meanwhile, linebacker Derrick Barnes is looking to build on the continuity he and his teammates have developed over the past two seasons. The three-year veteran believes their chemistry will continue to be a strength this year.

“The same thing goes when Alex is here,” Barnes said. “We, all three, are on the same page. Even the other guys in the room, we’ve built a strong bond.”

Third-year quarterback Hendon Hooker is off to a strong start in training camp, processing and getting rid of the ball quickly. His confidence is building, and he’s looking forward to competing with veteran Kyle Allen for the right to back up starter Jared Goff.

“I have a lot more confidence in the huddle,” Hooker said. “My teammates can see it, as well, because they’re giving me good feedback when I go in the locker room.”

Offensive tackle Taylor Decker revealed that he’s happy with his decision to undergo surgery on his shoulder injury. The rehab has been going smoothly, and Decker expects to return to practice early next month.

Decker has high praise for second-year tackle Giovanni Manu, saying he’s starting to gain confidence in himself. Manu’s development is generating interest this offseason, and Decker believes he’ll continue to improve with more reps.

Finally, cornerback Terrion Arnold is focused on perfecting his game, re-watching film from his rookie season and focusing on fundamentals. His goal is clear: winning the Super Bowl, which motivates him every day.
